Hallo Hallo Hallo Then

Japanese Police HatThe Japanese police are frequently derided as completely inept, which is fair enough considering some of the things they get up to - losing evidence, groping and not really knowing when to use their guns or not.

Two recent articles in The Mainichi have also seemed to back up the intelligence at work in the Japanese police force, although to be fair, it could just be the translations.

Check out this gem of deductive reasoning from an article entitled Man found on railway tracks bound and gagged dies in hospital -

Investigators suspect that the man either committed suicide by leaping onto the tracks or was murdered, and are trying to identify him.

Wow. That’s a brave assumption for them to make, don’t you think? There are so many other things that could be behind the unfortunate series of events…

Less idiotic, but still puzzling is this tidbit from the sorry tale of Woman stabbed to death in broad daylight in supermarket parking lot -

Police found bloodstains on the driver’s seat of her car, and suspect that she was stabbed while still in the driver’s seat.

I teach five year olds who might be able to come to that conclusion once I’d explained all the big words to them.

I get the feeling that the only reason crime rates ever fall in Japan is because the criminals get bored with the complete lack of challenge offered them, and just move overseas. If there’s anything I learned from films, its that most criminals really get a kick out of eluding the officers investigating them, while making derisive phone calls, sending derisive postcards - actually, just derisively staying in touch; I’m sure even a homing pigeon would do in a pinch.
